About This Tool

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads running iOS 11 and later. While HEIC produces sharper photos at roughly half the file size of JPEG, it is not supported by Windows 10 (without an optional codec), most Android devices, or the vast majority of web services and apps. Converting HEIC to JPG solves the compatibility problem instantly, giving you photos that open on any device or platform.

JustConvert supports both HEIC and HEIF files and converts them to high-quality JPEG while preserving the full resolution and colour fidelity of the original photo. The entire process runs on secure servers and your photos are permanently deleted after you download the converted file — your memories stay private.

Why iPhones save HEIC, and when to convert

Since iOS 11, iPhones and iPads capture photos as HEIC because it stores the same image quality in roughly half the space of JPEG — a real win for your phone's storage. The catch shows up the moment a photo leaves the Apple world: Windows without an extra codec, many Android phones, older software, and plenty of upload forms simply cannot open HEIC. Converting to JPG removes that friction and gives you a file that opens everywhere, which is why it is worth doing before emailing photos, submitting application forms, or sharing with non-Apple users.

What you keep and what changes

Converting HEIC to JPG preserves the full resolution, colours, and detail of the photo at a quality that looks identical to the eye. Two technical things change. JPG files are larger than the HEIC original — that is the price of universal support. And certain HEIC-only extras such as depth maps, Live Photo motion, and some HDR metadata are not part of the JPG standard, so a converted file is a single still image. For an everyday photo you want to share or upload, none of that is noticeable.

Optional: stop your iPhone making HEIC

If you find yourself converting constantly, you can change the camera itself. On the iPhone, open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible; new photos are then captured as JPG. Leave it on High Efficiency if you would rather save storage and convert only the photos you actually need to share. Either way, photos already taken stay HEIC until you convert them here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a HEIC file? expand_more

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is the default photo format used by iPhones and iPads (iOS 11+) and by some Android devices. It stores images in HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) with better compression than JPEG — giving roughly the same quality at half the file size.

Why can't I open HEIC files on my Windows PC? expand_more

Windows 10 and 11 do not include native HEIC support by default. You need to install the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store, which may require a small purchase. Converting HEIC to JPG is the easiest and free way to make your photos open instantly on any Windows PC.

Will the HEIC to JPG conversion lose quality? expand_more

JustConvert uses a high-quality JPEG encoding that preserves the full detail, colour, and sharpness of your iPhone photos. There is a small theoretical quality cost because JPEG is lossy, but it is imperceptible to the human eye at the settings we use.

Can I convert a HEIC file on my phone without a computer? expand_more

Yes. JustConvert is a browser-based tool that works on any smartphone browser, including Safari on iPhone. Simply visit the page, upload your HEIC file, and download the converted JPG directly on your phone.

Are my photos safe when I upload them? expand_more

Yes. All uploaded photos are processed on secure servers and permanently deleted as soon as you download the converted JPG. We do not store, view, or share your photos for any purpose.
