About This Tool

Extracting data from a PDF into an editable spreadsheet used to require expensive software. JustConvert's free PDF to Excel converter does it instantly in your browser. Upload any PDF containing tables, financial statements, invoices, or data grids, and the tool will map the content into properly structured rows and columns in a .xlsx file.

The converter is especially effective on PDFs generated from Word, Excel, or accounting software where the original table structure is embedded in the file. For scanned PDFs, OCR is applied to recognise numeric and text data before building the spreadsheet.

  • check_circleExtracts tables into structured rows and columns
  • check_circleOutput is standard .xlsx compatible with Excel and Google Sheets
  • check_circleMulti-sheet output for PDFs with multiple tables
  • check_circleOCR support for scanned data PDFs
  • check_circleHandles invoices, reports, and financial statements
  • check_circleFree to use — no account needed

What converts well, and what fights back

PDF to Excel works best when the table was born digital — exported from accounting software, a bank statement generator, Excel, or a reporting tool — because the rows and columns are real structures the converter can follow. A scanned table is just a picture of a grid, so it relies on OCR to read each number, and faint lines, skew, or handwriting lower the accuracy. The quick test is the same as for any PDF: if you can select a cell's text with your cursor, expect a clean extraction; if you cannot, plan to check the numbers.

Tidying the spreadsheet afterwards

Even a good extraction usually needs a minute of cleanup, and knowing what to look for makes it quick:

  • Numbers stored as text will not sum until you convert them — select the column and use Excel's "Convert to Number."
  • Merged or split cells can appear where the PDF spanned a heading across columns; unmerge and re-align as needed.
  • Several tables on one page may land on separate sheets or stack vertically — check every sheet tab.
  • Currency symbols and thousands separators sometimes break into their own column; a find-and-replace fixes them fast.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a PDF table to Excel? expand_more

Upload your PDF above and click Convert. The tool detects tables and data structures in the PDF and maps them to rows and columns in a downloadable .xlsx file.

Can I extract data from a scanned PDF to Excel? expand_more

Yes. Scanned PDFs are processed with OCR to recognise numbers and text before building the spreadsheet. The accuracy depends on the scan quality.

Will the Excel file have the correct number of columns? expand_more

For well-structured PDFs with clear table boundaries, column alignment is accurate. Complex layouts with merged cells or irregular spacing may need minor manual adjustments after conversion.

Is there a limit on the number of pages or rows? expand_more

There is no fixed row limit. Files up to 50 MB are supported. Very large PDFs with hundreds of pages may take a few seconds longer to process.

What is the difference between PDF to Excel and PDF to CSV? expand_more

PDF to Excel (.xlsx) outputs a formatted workbook that can contain multiple sheets and retains some styling. PDF to CSV exports plain comma-separated text data, better suited for importing into databases or data analysis tools.
