Useful audio extraction workflows

Use the Video to Audio tool when the soundtrack matters more than the visuals, or when you need a smaller audio-only file for editing, sharing, or archiving.

About This Tool

JustConvert's Video to Audio converter extracts the first audio track from common video containers and exports it into the audio format you choose. MP3 is the safest default for phones, browsers, cars, and sharing apps. M4A is a compact modern choice, WAV is best for editing, FLAC keeps lossless quality in a smaller file, and OGG or OPUS work well for web delivery.

Conversion runs server-side with FFmpeg, the industry-standard media processing engine. The uploaded video is validated before processing, the video stream is discarded, metadata is removed from the output, and files are automatically cleaned up after the download window.

Pick the format for where the audio is going

The right format depends entirely on what you will do with the audio next, not on which sounds "best" in the abstract. For listening on a phone or sharing, MP3 is the safe universal choice. For editing in software, export WAV (uncompressed, maximum compatibility) or FLAC (lossless but smaller). For the web or voice notes, OPUS and OGG deliver good quality at tiny sizes. M4A sits between MP3 and OPUS as a compact, modern, widely supported option.

Bitrate, in plain terms

Bitrate controls how much detail a lossy format keeps. For speech — lectures, interviews, meetings — 96–128 kbps is plenty and keeps files small. For music you want to enjoy, 256–320 kbps preserves the detail. Going higher than the source can offer does not help: audio that was recorded at low quality will not improve by choosing 320 kbps, it just makes a bigger file. When in doubt, 192 kbps is a sensible all-round default. Lossless WAV and FLAC ignore bitrate entirely — they keep everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which video formats are supported? expand_more

You can upload MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, WEBM, AVI, MPEG, MPG, and 3GP files up to 15 minutes long. The video must contain at least one audio track.

Which audio format should I choose? expand_more

Choose MP3 for maximum compatibility, M4A for smaller modern audio, WAV for editing, FLAC for lossless archiving, OGG for open web audio, or OPUS for efficient speech and music.

Does this reduce the video file size? expand_more

Yes. The output contains audio only, so it is usually much smaller than the original video. WAV and FLAC can still be large because they preserve more audio data.

Can I convert video to MP3? expand_more

Yes. MP3 is the default output format. Upload your video, keep MP3 selected, and click Process.

What happens if my video has no sound? expand_more

The conversion will stop and show an error because there is no audio track to extract.
