When PNG is the right target rather than JPG

Both conversions solve the same underlying problem — a WebP that software will not open — but they suit different images. Convert to PNG when the image has a transparent background, or when it contains text, sharp edges, or flat areas of colour: logos, icons, screenshots, diagrams, and UI captures. PNG is lossless, so it adds no further degradation to an image that has already been through one lossy encoder, and it keeps edges crisp.

Convert to JPG instead when the image is a photograph with no transparency, because PNG stores photographic content very inefficiently and the file will be several times larger for no visible benefit. If you are unsure, the presence of transparency settles it: only PNG keeps it.

Transparency, and the checkerboard

WebP supports a full alpha channel — not just fully transparent or fully opaque pixels, but partial transparency, which is what gives a logo smooth anti-aliased edges instead of jagged ones. PNG supports the same, so the conversion preserves it exactly.

The grey and white checkerboard you see behind such an image in an editor is not part of the file; it is how software indicates transparency. Placed on a website or in a document, the image sits over whatever is behind it. This is the specific reason to choose PNG over JPG for a logo: converting a transparent WebP to JPG replaces the transparency with solid white, which looks correct on a white page and obviously wrong on any other background.

Expect the file to grow

PNG is lossless, so it stores the image exactly, and the resulting file is frequently two to four times larger than the WebP it came from. For a photograph the multiple can be far higher. This is not a fault in the conversion — it is the cost of not discarding anything — but it is worth anticipating if the destination has an upload limit.

If the resulting PNG is too large, there are two honest options. Reduce the pixel dimensions with Image Resize, which is usually the right answer since most images are supplied far larger than they are displayed. Or, if the image has no transparency, convert to JPG instead and accept the small lossy step in exchange for a much smaller file.
