What WebP does better than PNG
WebP supports both lossless and lossy compression, and for the graphics PNG is normally used for — logos, icons, screenshots, illustrations — lossless WebP typically produces files 20 to 30 percent smaller than PNG with pixel-identical output. Nothing is given up. Where the source is photographic, lossy WebP goes much further, often 50 to 70 percent smaller than the PNG, with a difference invisible at normal viewing size.
Transparency survives in both modes, which is the detail that matters most when moving away from PNG.
