Image to Text (OCR)
Extract text from images and scanned PDFs, then download it as text or a searchable PDF.
How it works
Upload
Select a photo, screenshot, scan, or PDF that contains text.
Recognize
The OCR engine reads the text from every page or image.
Download
Copy the text, save it as a .txt file, or download a searchable PDF.
What you can do with OCR
Optical character recognition turns pictures of text into real, selectable text. That is useful any time the words you need are locked inside an image or a scan instead of a document you can edit or search.
Digitise receipts and notes
Pull the text out of photographed receipts, whiteboards, or handwritten-style printouts so you can paste it into a document or spreadsheet.
Make scans searchable
Turn a scanned book chapter, contract, or form into a searchable PDF so you can find words with Ctrl+F instead of reading every page.
Reuse text from images
Copy quotes from a screenshot, extract a code or address from a photo, or grab text from a slide without retyping it.
About This Tool
JustConvert's OCR tool extracts text from images and scanned PDFs using the Tesseract optical character recognition engine. Upload a JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP, TIFF, GIF, or PDF, and the tool reads the printed text and returns it as plain text you can copy or download. For documents, it also rebuilds a searchable PDF: the page looks the same, but an invisible text layer is added so the file becomes selectable and searchable.
This is ideal for digitising paperwork, pulling quotes from screenshots, saving text from photos, and making scanned files findable. Files are processed over HTTPS and removed after processing, so your documents are not stored or shared. Recognition works best on clear, high-contrast, upright text; very blurry, skewed, or stylised images may produce a few mistakes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is OCR and how does it work? expand_more
OCR stands for optical character recognition. It analyses the shapes in an image and converts them into machine-readable text. JustConvert uses the Tesseract engine to read printed text from photos, scans, and PDFs.
Can I make a scanned PDF searchable? expand_more
Yes. When you upload a PDF, the tool reads each page and rebuilds a searchable PDF with an invisible text layer over the original page image. You can then select text and search the document with Ctrl+F.
Which image and file formats are supported? expand_more
JPG, JPEG, PNG, WebP, BMP, TIFF, and GIF images are supported, along with PDF files of up to 20 pages. For longer PDFs, split the file first and run OCR on each part.
How accurate is the text extraction? expand_more
Accuracy is high for clear, high-contrast, upright printed text. Blurry photos, unusual fonts, skewed scans, or handwriting can produce errors, so use the sharpest, straightest source image you have.
Does OCR work on handwriting? expand_more
OCR is designed for printed and typed text. Neat handwriting may be partly recognised, but results are unreliable, so it is best used for printed documents.
Are my uploaded files kept? expand_more
No. Files are processed over HTTPS and automatically removed after processing. JustConvert does not store, share, or manually review your uploads.
