Lorem Ipsum Generator

Lorem ipsum is a scrambled passage from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC and used by typesetters since the 1500s. It survives because it is meaningless. Filling a layout with real English invites everyone in the room to read and critique the copy instead of the design, and a stakeholder who dislikes a sentence will stop looking at the spacing entirely.

It also has the right texture. Latin word lengths and letter frequencies are close enough to English that a paragraph occupies roughly the space real copy will, so line breaks, column widths, and vertical rhythm behave realistically. Repeating a single word, or pasting the same sentence twenty times, produces a block that looks nothing like prose and hides exactly the problems a mockup exists to reveal.

Match the amount to what the real content will be, not to what fills the box nicely. If a product description will run 40 words, generating 200 words of lorem ipsum produces a design that breaks the moment real copy arrives. Designing to a realistic length is the single most useful thing placeholder text can do for you.

Useful reference points: a headline is 5 to 10 words, a subheading 10 to 20, a card or product blurb 20 to 50, a blog paragraph 40 to 80, and a full article section 300 to 500. Then test the edges deliberately. Generate a one-word version and a triple-length version of each field and check that the layout survives both, because real users will submit both. Buttons with a single word and buttons with six words are where most responsive layouts first break.

Placeholder text has a shelf life, and shipping past it is a genuine risk. Lorem ipsum has reached production on newspaper front pages, retail packaging, and live checkout flows, usually because it sat in a template nobody re-read. Search for "lorem" across the codebase before any release and treat a hit as a blocker.

There is also a design argument for dropping it earlier than you might expect. Real or realistic content exposes problems placeholder never will: names that are much longer than "John Smith", prices with more digits than expected, categories with no items, and error states with no text at all. Content-first design means writing rough real copy early and refining it, and it tends to produce interfaces that need less rework. Use lorem ipsum for the first pass at spacing and hierarchy, then replace it as soon as anyone can supply a draft. Never use it in anything shown to a customer, in an SEO-visible page, or in an accessibility review, where a screen reader will read the Latin aloud.
